Kristal Baele appointed to the THUAS Board of Trustees
Upon the nomination of the THUAS General Council, Kristel Baele has been appointed to the Board of Trustees as of 16 June. Kristel Baele is a very experienced administrator and overseer, with vast experience in the field of higher education. From 2015 to 2019, Baele served as chair of the Executive Board of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. She has also been a member of the Economic Board Zuid Holland (2015–2019), chair of the strategic alliance between the three universities in South-Holland, Leiden, Delft and Erasmus (2017–2019), a member of the independent strategic advisory body for the government on education, the Education Council of the Netherlands (2011–2018) and a member of the Nuffic advisory board, the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education and research (2011–2017).
Baele: “The Hague University of Applied Sciences with its international, multicultural profile focused on the Randstad region is an institution where I believe that my background and experience can make a valuable contribution.
I have been passionate about and committed to education for many years. A good education is one of the most important cornerstones in your life. Applied research enhances that quality. I have been able to contribute to this through my various administrative and advisory roles. I have always involved students in this process. They add viewpoints and ideas that are often overlooked or missing. Sometimes they can lend a whole new perspective to issues.”
Kristel Baele succeeds Kitty Nooy, who is leaving the university of applied sciences on 15 June after a four-year mandate. The Board of Trustees always appoints a member who has been specifically nominated by the General Council, the central participatory body of the university of applied sciences. Like her predecessor Kitty Nooy, Kristel Baele has been appointed to the board upon the recommendation of the General Council. The position received more than 50 applications. In an open and transparent procedure, the General Council first made a long list and then a short list of the interested candidates. When the selection had been narrowed down to the two most suitable candidates in the eyes of the General Council, they presented their candidates to the Board of Trustees. In their final selection, the Board chose Kristel Baele.
Mendeltje van Keulen, chair of the General Council: “The General council is looking forward to renewed cooperation with Kristel Baele and the Board of Trustees, of which she will be part on the recommendation of the participation. Kristel Baele brings a wealth of experience in higher education and applied research. She expresses the conviction that good cooperation between the Board of Trustees, the Executive Board and the participation is essential for strengthening The Hague University of Applied Sciences.”
Kristel Baele: “The participatory body plays a key role in the daily operation of a university of applied sciences. They have a finger on the pulse of the organisation. I believe that a good working relationship between the Executive Board, the General Council and the Board of Trustees is essential for students, staff members and the university’s wellbeing. It demands trust, an open dialogue, the willingness to listen and the ability to look beyond agenda items.
The combination of an education and research portfolio with participation makes this position unique. Both offer the opportunity to connect, at an appropriate distance, with what really matters to a university of applied sciences.”
Wubbo Tempel, Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, comments, “We are very pleased that an administrative heavyweight such as Kristel Baele will strengthen our Board of Trustees.”
