Leonard Geluk appointed new general director of the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG)
On 1 April, Leonard Geluk will start in a new position as General Director of the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG). Geluk will be saying goodbye to The Hague University of Applied Sciences, where he has been Chair of the Executive Board since 2014.
“In the last six years, I have been fortunate to lead this incredible university of applied sciences through exciting developments. My most important assignment was to reinforce the identity and visibility of THUAS,” says Geluk. “By creating a strong profile for Global Citizenship, Internationalisation and a Networking University of Applied Sciences and carving out a stronger position for research, I think we have been very successful. I’m very pleased with the current stability at the university of applied sciences and I fully trust that this positive change will continue.”
For the past 11 years, Geluk has been active in education as a school administrator. In the 17 years prior to that, he worked in local government as a district councillor, city councillor and alderman for the city of Rotterdam. “With my move to VNG I will once again fully resume my activities in a political administrative capacity. I look forward to contributing to the strengthening of the position of the municipal government as the first level of government, in the best interest of our citizens.”
Wubbo Tempel, Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Hague University of Applied Sciences: “Over the course of six years, Leonard has succeeded in creating a clear direction and structure for the university of applied sciences, including a solid educational vision we can be proud of. We can now build further on the foundation laid by Leonard together with his successor. I wish Leonard all the best in his new role at the VNG, a fantastic position with a great deal of responsibility.”
Mendeltje van Keulen, Chair of the General Council, comments: “We congratulate Leonard on his new position and thank him for his tremendous efforts on behalf of the university of applied sciences over the last six years.”
Jan van Zanen, Chair of the VNG, comments: “We are very pleased that Leonard Geluk is returning to local government, now in the role of General Director of the VNG. He is an experienced administrator and fully committed to municipal activities.”
The departure of Leonard Geluk means that a vacancy has opened up within the Executive Board of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. The Board of Trustees will begin the recruitment process for a successor as quickly as possible.
