All students are welcome to the seminar. THUAS students can also participate in a poster competition.

Research project ‘Civic leadership & good governance’

Through a collaborative research project, The Hague University of Applied Science and Leiden University work on improving our understanding of the challenges involved in civic leadership and good (board) governance. The central question is: ‘What does it take to successfully lead civil society organizations and thereby contribute to democratic decision-making in the Netherlands and the EU?’ The research project is led by Prof. dr. Caelesta Braun (Leiden University) and dr. Agota Szabo (Centre of Expertise for Global Governance, THUAS).

On Friday 24 June Prof. dr. Caelesta Braun and dr. Agota Szabo will inform leaders of NGOs and non-profit organizations who have participated in a recent interview study about their findings. Best practices derived from the interview study will be shared and discussed. The presentation will be followed by a discussion about ‘The future of civic leadership including good governance, transparency, accountability.’

Q &A session: meet the leaders of NGOs and non-profit organizations

During the second part of the seminar students can ask a selected group of NGOs and non-profit organizations leaders questions about what it is like to work for such organizations and the challenges they are facing.

Drinks and networking

After the seminar there will be time for drinks and networking.

About the research project

The research project ‘Civic leadership & good governance aims to better understand the challenges involved in successfully leading and managing civil society organizations. Such an endeavour is particularly timely as many public officials increasingly demand the participation of civil society organizations in policymaking, both at the EU and national member-state level. Such a demand is in line with the calls of international organizations such as the OECD which emphasize that “the central objective of (regulatory) policy – ensuring that regulations are designed and implemented in the public interest – can only be achieved with help from those concerned by regulations – the ‘stakeholders’”. While such calls are understandable, it also creates a challenging task for civil society organization to balance political engagement with successful organizational management.

Research Seed Grant

The project is funded by a Research Seed Grant from THUAS explicitly aimed at facilitating collaboration between Leiden University and THUAS to ensure practical application of high-quality academic research. The project will generate unique data on successful governance and leadership of civil society organizations.
