Commemorative Event: 10 years after the passing of dissident writer, last Czechoslovak and first Czech president Václav Havel

This December, it’s been exactly a decade since the passing of Václav Havel, renowned playwright, Czechoslovak dissident, European thinker and visionary politician, last Czechoslovak president, and first president of the independent Czech Republic.

On behalf of the Czech Centre and the interdisciplinary minor “Eastern European Politics”, we cordially invite you to a commemorative event on 8 November 2021, from 14:45 to 17:45h.

During this commemorative event, we will discuss the life and legacy of Václav Havel and reflect on the current developments in Central Europe.

Introduction lecture by Dr. Tomáš Cirhan (Leiden University) about Havel’s legacy in the current political landscape of Central Europe and Czechia

Screening of the documentary movie „Citizen Havel Is Rolling Barrels“ (Jan Novák, 2009), about Havel as a dissident in communist Czechoslovakia and the ‚normalization period‘ of the 1970s.
