Scholarships and financial support

There are different ways to finance your studies depending upon whether you come from the EU/EEA and Switzerland or outside the region.

Financial support for EU/EEA and non EU/EEA students

As an international student in university or higher professional education in the Netherlands you can apply for student finance. More information can be found here.

NL Scholarship

Do you come from outside the EEA (EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland and want to do your bachelor degree at THUAS? You can apply for the €5,000 NL Scholarship financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch universities.

Do I qualify for the NL Scholarship?

You are eligible for the NL Scholarship if you: 

  • do not possess the nationality of EEA member states or Switzerland 
  • are applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s program 
  • have never studied at an education institution in the Netherlands 
  • are enrolling at THUAS for the first time 
  • have never applied for this scholarship before 
  • pay the institutional tuition fee 
  • have been conditionally accepted as a THUAS student by June 1st, 2024 
  • you will remain a THUAS student for the whole academic year of 2024-2025 
  • Students from Ukraine who fall under the Temporary Protection Directive cannot apply. 
Scholarship application process

Apply for your chosen bachelor’s or master’s program at THUAS 

  • Write your essay  
  • Submit your essay before May 20th, 2024. Please make sure that you have carefully read the essay assignment. The assignment should be submitted as PDF file attached to your email to talentscholarship@hhs.nl. Please mention “NL Scholarship application + [your student number]” in the subject field of your email. 
  • Applicants are notified not later than June 10th, 2024 whether they will receive the scholarship or not. 
  • Scholarship grants will be paid out in November, 2024. 
Scholarship assessments and results

Our committee of judges will select the best essays on the basis of the following core criteria: 

  • content 
  • structure 
  • language 
  • authenticity and objective 

After your essay has been reviewed by the committee of judges, you will receive an e-mail notification by June 10th, 2024 with the results of your application.

A few ground rules

You will only be awarded the scholarship once you have been conditionally accepted and have met the terms of enrolment. Winners will receive the €5,000 scholarship after opening a Dutch bank account when arrived in the Netherlands.

Essay assignment Our Diversity is Our Strength

Our world is becoming more interconnected each day, as technologies and ideas are evolving rapidly. It is vital for our international students that they can break the barriers between cultures and nationalities; they have to work together in an international and intercultural setting. 

The Hague University of Applied Sciences contributes to a sustainable and just society through high quality research and practice-oriented knowledge. We educate our students to become critical thinkers and teach them to take leadership in a globalized arena. As global citizens, our students learn about what is going on in the world and how economies, cultures, and groups behave and relate to each other.  

You will write an essay in the English language of a minimum of 950 and a maximum of 1100 words. In this essay, you describe what your contribution will be to the intercultural environment of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. This essay should address your perspective on global citizenship and how you will contribute to the intercultural environment at THUAS, using your cultural background and knowledge.

Orange Tulip Scholarship

The Orange Tulip Scholarship (OTS) is part of the Holland Scholarship and is offered by Dutch higher education institutions, multinationals and government organisations for talented students. The OTS is available in Brazil, China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. It’s managed by the Nuffic Neso offices in the following participating countries:

To apply you’ll need to fill in the Holland Scholarship application form and attach your essay. You’ll receive a Holland Scholarship certificate if you get an OTS scholarship.

Scholarships from your home country

It’s worth checking out if any scholarships are available in your home country. A good starting point is your Dutch embassy or your present college or university.
For example, American students can apply for a Fulbright Center scholarship. Your country may offer similar grants.

Scholarships for international Master students

There are several scholarships for international Master students. Find out everything you want to know about these scholarship opportunities.

Part-time jobs 

Some international students may opt for a part-time job during their studies at THUAS. You are not required to speak Dutch, although it is considered to be a good asset when finding employment.

For EU/EEA nationals 

If you are from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, a work permit is not required and there is no restriction on the amount of work hours. You will even have the option to apply for study financing from the Dutch government if you work a minimum of 56 hours per month. More information on study fin can be found on the DUO website. 

For non-EU/EEA nationals

As a non-EU/EEA student with a residence permit for you also have the possibility to work part-time. Be advised that you can only work a maximum of 16 hours per week during your study or full-time for seasonal employment for a maximum of three months.
