Introduction

The courses (generally 6-week modules and 1 week intensive) are taught in English. A lot of attention will be paid to international developments in Facility Management. Foreign lecturers will integrate examples derived from their native countries into their courses. The "Exchange Project EXPO" also contributes to the international orientation of the course. A more detailed description of the modules follows hereunder.

Content

Learning method

The International Semester consists of theory and practical assignments and theoretical schooling. During the theoretical part, workshops and lectures prepare students for the practical assignment. The students also have the chance to consult experts.

Modules

Examples of the subjects are:

  • Accommodation Management: Space, Place and Use

  • Management of Change
  • Strategic Management
  • Management of Real Estate
  • Exchange Project EXPO
  • Creativity and Innovation in FM
  • Total Quality Management
  • Cross Cultural Communication
  • Human Resources Management

In addition to the theoretical education, students put theory into practice in a practical assignment carried out in groups of 4 to 6 students. The project has an innovative and international character and public relevance. Dutch international business has a prominent position. EXPO focuses on Health Care institutes and the Cure & Care side. A professional coach supervises each project group.

Assessment

A self administered English test is conducted during the first week of the International Semester..

Learning goals

After the semester, students will have gained experience in:

  • Working in international projects: drawing up a project plan, working together in (virtual) teams

  • Acting in international settings (communicating effectively in multicultural situations with colleagues and clients and empathising with people from diverse backgrounds).

Furthermore, they will have developed the relevant skills and knowledge for their specific bachelor programme. The exam comprises:

  • A presentation of the final product (by group)

  • An assessment, which includes the evaluation of the group process
  • Writing a paper about the experiences gained and the reflection on that
  • Some written examinations

Depending on the student’s programme at the home university, the student may opt to follow only the first half of the programme. In that case the practical assignment will be adapted. The shortened programme will take 10 weeks and the student will gain 15 ECTS.

Prerequisites

A-levels. Educational and/or professional experience in the field of facility management, hospitality management or service management is an advantage. The programme starts every half year, in February and September. At least 12 participants are required for the programme to take place
