Introduction

The Academy of ICT and Media welcomes students from partner universities around the world to its International Semester. During this semester, students broaden their knowledge of ICT by addressing the international aspects of the subject. With both Dutch and foreign students from several countries, the programme is truly international in both teaching and participants.

Content

Learning method

The International Semester consists of a practical assignment and theoretical schooling. During the theoretical part, workshops and lectures prepare students for the practical assignment. The students also have the chance to consult experts.

Modules

Example of the subjects:

  • Creative techniques

  • Intercultural communication
  • Dealing with the Dutch
  • Presenting and reporting in English
  • International project management and virtual teams
  • Multicultural teamwork
  • International business
  • Topics specific to the bachelor programmes of the students

In addition to the theoretical education, students put theory into practice in a practical assignment carried out in groups of 4 to 6 students. The project has an innovative and international character and public relevance. Dutch international business has a prominent position. Possible subjects include: information dissemination during disasters, water management, data processing in developing countries or information security management. Each project includes carrying out a feasibility study and software development. A coach supervises each project group.

Learning goals

After the semester, students will have gained experience in:

  • Working in international projects: drawing up a project plan, working together in (virtual) teams

  • Acting in international settings (communicating effectively in multicultural situations with colleagues and clients and empathising with people with diverse backgrounds).

Furthermore, they will have developed the relevant skills and knowledge for their specific bachelor programme.

Assessment

Written exam

  • Written exam on the subjects: international project management and virtual teamwork, intercultural communication, public aspects of information technology, we the Dutch and efficient information research.
  • Assignments and presentations (pass or fail).

Oral exam

  • A presentation of the findings of the project assignment and an oral exam (individually).

  • A report of the findings of the project (individually).

The final grade is the weighted mean of written (10) and oral (5) exam. All parts of the examination should lead to a 5.5 or higher (≥5.5).

Depending on the student’s programme at the home university, the student may opt to follow only the first half of the programme. In that case the practical assignment will be adapted. The shortened programme will take 10 weeks and the student will gain 15 ECTS.

Social and cultural programme

Students of the Academy for ICT & Media will be involved in setting up a social and cultural programme for the visiting students. The students association for international students (Inter Access) and the study association for the students of ICT & Media (SIM) will also carry out some parts of the social and cultural programme. The programme will include some site visits of major ICT projects. We will study the use of ICT in, for example: the harbour of Rotterdam (logistics), flower auction (Aalsmeer) and the Delta works.
