Future Career
What can you do with your degree, once you graduate? The possibilities are endless. All kinds of international businesses and organisations – not just governments - need people with a blend of management skills and specialist knowledge of public policy.
But there are four types of roles that follow on naturally from a Bachelor of International Public Management.
Policy officers
Policy officers are responsible for advising public organisations, to solve problems. Drafting recommendations, weighing up all the different options, running debates and discussions. It’s about negotiating and networking, finding solutions that work for everyone.
Project managers
Almost all organisations need people who can run large-scale projects, with clear objectives and outcomes. You could end up working for a national organisation, or an international interest group. It’s your job to unearth the facts, analyse them and report on your findings.
Operational management
Operations managers are responsible for running whole departments or areas of an organisation or business. You could be a branch manager for an enforcement agency. Or team leader for a public planning department, for example. You need to be good with numbers, and know how to manage people effectively.
Organisational support
Lots of large government agencies have a department that looks at organisational issues, acting as a consultancy. It’s up to you to spot ‘bottlenecks’ in an organisation, and advise management on different ways to make things more efficient. This takes consultancy skills, as well as a head for abstract ideas.
The door is wide open.
