Tuition fees 2011-2012

By following the steps below, you can find out how much in tuition fees you will have to pay for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The statutory rate of € 1,713 is set by the Dutch government and only applies to students who live in The Netherlands or the adjacent regions, who hold EU/EEA nationality or are Dutch residents with certain types of residence permits, and who have not yet obtained a Bachelor's, Master's or equivalent degree in The Netherlands since 1991. Students who do not meet all these criteria have to pay the institutional rate, which is set by The Hague University of Applied Sciences. To find out which rate applies to you, please follow the steps below.

Step 1

Where will you be living on 30 September 2011?

  1. In the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, or in one of the German federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony or Bremen.
    • You must be registered in the Municipal Database ( Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie, or GBA) by 30 September 2011. Note: If The Hague University of Applied Sciences is unable to locate your details in the GBA, you will have to prove that you lived in this district on 30 September 2011 by means of an extract from the municipality’s personal records database (if you are unable to provide this proof, you will have to pay the € 7,600 institutional rate, see step 1.2).
      Continue with step 2.
  2. Outside this area.
    • You pay the institutional rate of € 7,600.

Step 2

Do you have the nationality of an EU member state or of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Suriname or Switzerland?

  1. Yes.
  2. No, but the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF is paying the tuition fees on my behalf.
  3. No, but I have one of the residence permits referred to in this overview.
    • You must submit a copy of your residence permit that will be valid on 1 September 2011.
      Continue with step 3.
  4. No, but I will be receiving student financial assistance from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) in September 2011.
    • You must submit a copy of the Student Financial Assistance Notification ( Bericht Studiefinanciering) sent by DUO that proves this is the case.
      Continue with step 3.
  5. No, and I do not satisfy the criteria under steps 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.
    • The level of your institutional rate depends on the duration of your continuous enrolment in the same study programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences of Applied Sciences:
      Since 2010-2011 or later: € 7,600
      Since 2009-2010: € 5,710
      Since 2008-2009 or earlier: € 3,830
Note: from the 2012-2013 academic year, students in this category that have been enrolled at The Hague University of Applied Sciences of Applied Sciences for longer than five years will be liable to pay the highest institutional rate! You can find below the rates that we expect to charge for the next few academic years. These amounts are subject to approval. The rates for future academic years have yet to be fixed by the Executive Board.  They serve merely as an indication of the level of tuition fees for the academic years ahead.

2011-2012 € 7,600 € 7,775 € 7,950 € 8,130

Step 3

Did you obtain a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or an equivalent certificate such as a higher professional education degree certificate ( HBO-eindgetuigschrift), kandidaatsdiploma or a university diploma ( WO-doctoraal), at a government-funded institution in the Netherlands after 1 August 1991? Qualifications obtained in non-funded programmes, e.g. at private institutions such as LOI or Schoevers, do not count.

  1. No.
  2. Yes, I am doing a study programme in either education or healthcare, and my previous qualification was not in either education or health care ( more information).
  3. Yes, I started my current study programme before I obtained my previous qualification and I did not stop in the meantime.
Note: from the 2013-2014 academic year, you will probably pay the high institutional rate!
  4. Yes, and I do satisfy the criteria under steps 3.2 and 3.3.
    • The level of your institutional rate depends on the duration of your continuous enrolment in the same study programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences of Applied Sciences:
      Since 2010-2011 or later: € 7,600
Since 2009-2010 or earlier: There is a transitional arrangement for this category of students whereby the institutional rate will be set to the statutory tuition fee rate.
      Continue with step 4.
Note: from the 2012-2013 academic year, this transitional arrangement will only apply to students that are within the nominal study duration of their second study programme. You can find below the rates that we expect to charge for the next few academic years. These amounts are subject to approval. The rates for future academic years have yet to be fixed by the Executive Board. They serve merely as an indication of the level of tuitions fees for the academic years ahead. Moreover, these rates only apply to Bachelor’s degree programmes. Students on Associate Degree programmes will pay the high rate from 2012-2013, regardless of their year of initial registration.

2011-2012 € 7,600 € 7,775 € 7,950 € 8,130

Step 4

The statutory rate is € 1,713.

Note: as of 1 September 2012, the statutory tuition fees for students that exceed the nominal term allowed to complete their study programmes, the so-called ‘ langstudeerders’, will be raised by an additional € 3,000. Therefore, these plans will have no effect in the academic year 2011-2012. In concrete terms, this means that you can take a Bachelor’s degree programme at a university of applied sciences for five years at the lower rate and you will be liable to pay the higher rate for any additional years. The determination of the years you have been registered will include all years of enrolment from 1991, even if you were enrolled at other Dutch research universities or universities of applied sciences.

More information about this measure can be found on this page.
